Because Someone Had To: A Dedicated Porn VR Headset

Disclaimer: This article discusses themes of an adult nature and as such should be considered not safe for work.

Despite our concerted efforts to hide the facts of life from our children as long as possible, the truth is that sex and sexuality are a key part of the human experience. After all, that’s why we have things like Rule 34(Link NSFW), which pretty much sums up humanity. Surely the first cave person who figured out they could draw on the walls wasted almost no time before committing the first depiction of genitalia.

Pornography is therefore incredibly popular and the internet has made it much more so. Apparently the only thing more popular than adult films is a major video game. When major games release it turns out major sites such as Pornhub see a significant dip in traffic.

Now we have a sort-of merger of the two with the announced release of a standalone HMD made for one purpose: skin flicks.

Porn Does it Again

Pornography has played a major role in driving media market trends in the last century or so. VHS, DVD and BluRay all owe a debt of thanks to pornography since these were the formats the industry embraced, creating (ahem) excitement for the hardware to play this stuff in the home.

There’s been a lot of talk that once again dirty movies would be the killer app when it comes to VR, but this new headset really hammers the message home when it beat Google to the punch of releasing an all-in-one VR system.

What’s in a Name?

This HMD has been dubbed the “VRotica” and we’re sure that Microsoft is absolutely tickled at the potential market confusion with its own Hololens AR system, or Microsoft Holographic as a whole for that matter. Why? Because the company behind it have named themselves simply “Hologram”.

Cheap as Chips

The current project asking price is a paltry $220, which is very low given that this is a complete system. There are some premium HMD smartphone cases that cost the same or even more.

Of course, at that price we’re probably not talking about rendered 3D graphics, since generating such “assets” (hurhur) would require expensive chips. No, the content on offer is 3D video and when you put down your cold, hard, cash there will be six videos pre-loaded on the device.

Hologram are mainly interested in launching a special platform for content and eventually plan to sell hundreds of videos from various producers.

At this price you’re also not getting things like external controllers. The field of view is only 83 degrees and the screen is a (now pedestrian) 1080p.

If You Build It They Will…Nevermind

Since no one else has something similar on the market, we should quickly see whether the VRotica takes off or ends up prematurely going off the market. If they rub consumers the right way however, they could have a winner on their hands.
