The mind-boggling asking price of the Atheer Air smart glasses immediately tells you that we aren’t dealing with a consumer product here.

Indeed, Atheer is marketing this for all sorts of high-end professional applications in medicine, engineering and science.

Like the Hololens from Microsoft, Atheer’s HMD is an augmented reality or “AR” system that project digital imagery over your view of the real world, This means that it also needs sensors to see and interpret what you are seeing.

Systems such as these are actually complete, self-contained computers. The Atheer has a small box wired to it that contains most of the components.

The now-defunct Google Glass HMD had everything onboard, but was very limited in terms of computing power, so this seems like a fair compromise.

The Atheer sports some very powerful mobile hardware, using the Nvidia Tegra K1 platform as a basis.

Apart from its impressive specifications, it also has a claimed eight hours of battery life and connects to various wired and wireless standards.

The real value of course, comes from the software that supports various applications in the healthcare, insurance, construction, industrial and other fields. The price tag is certainly not just from the cost of making the headset.

It allows all sorts of neat information sharing and collaboration between people. It also basically acts as a hands-free smartphone or tablet, using 3D gesture display to let you interact with a large floating screen.

Devices like the Atheer Air may one day completely replace the smartphone form factor we know today as wearable computers become more advanced and popular.
