VRS OVERALL RATINGRecomended Not Recomended
We now have a lot of competitors in the HMD market that lay claim to the minimalist crown. HMD makers are falling over themselves to give us pocketable HMD cases that don’t get in the way.
Many of these have take the route of a foldable, almost spectacle-like design. Quantum Bakery have decided to go another way and have started from the premise that the HMD should be integrated into the phone.
The Figment is unfortunately meant only for one model of phone at this time. Specifically the Apple iPhone 6. It makes sense though, since this is such a closely-integrated solution. The HMD is integrated into a case that the phone fits into. This means that the Figment is a HMD that you never actually take your phone out of.
Since most of us have our phones in some sort of case anyway, why not modify it to double as a VR HMD? That’s exactly what Quantum Bakery set out to do when they launched their Kickstarter.
It takes just a second or two to convert the case into VR mode. There’s a hinged arm holding the lens assembly that simply swings around to the front of the phone. That’s it, you’re ready to use your VR app.
It’s a brilliant idea and if you have an iPhone 6 it’s certainly worth a look. But there are some drawbacks to it. For one thing, it’s open to external light. That’s actually not as big a problem as you may think, but some people may find it ruins things.
The other problem is that the design does not allow for adjustment of the lenses, since that would be too bulky and complex.
Other than that it’s a neat of slightly pricey solution to the issue of mobile HMDs that get in the way,VIEW ON AMAZON
