The XGVR by I AM CARDBOARD is perhaps one of the most blatantly Google Cardboard-inspired smartphone HMDs on the market. We know this because I AM CARDBOARD wears this fact on their sleeves.

Despite this, the XGVR is far more sophisticated in its design and construction than a simple plastic version of  a Cardboard. The company ran a successful Kickstarter in 2015, raising nearly $90 0,000.

The XGVR is certainly an HMD where a lot of thought has gone into ergonomics and ease of use. One oft-overlooked issue is faceplate hygiene. The XGVR let’s you swap out the facial foam pad to that you can allow other people to use it without being gross about it.

The lenses have multiple coatings which means they are toughened and resist glare and fingerprints.

The phone holder mechanism is quite clever, with a sort of geared mechanism that holds the phone in place.

They’ve also done something clever to get around the (now obsolete) magnetic button from the Google Cardboard. Since not all phones worked with this and even those that did were unreliable, I AM CARDBOARD created a Bluetooth clicker.

The clicker is simply a detachable button that simulates a tap on-screen. This means that no physical connection to the phone is required and Bluetooth is far more reliable than the magnetic switch design.

All in all, the XGVR looks like one of the more thoughtful and comfortable smartphone HMD cases out there. It can handle most phones with screen of six inches or smaller. It’s priced below products like the Gear VR and seems to be a decent quality.
