There’s a bit of a race on to make the smallest and most portable mobile HMD for phones. The first generation of products mostly ended up staying at home, because there was nowhere to put them on the go.

In general the solution to that problem has been rather extreme. Skinny frames, fabric housing and completely open designs have all allowed for pocketable HMDs.

The Leji takes a different approach. They asked themselves how small you could make a more traditional design. Given how absolutely tiny tiny the Leji is, it’s fair to say they’ve essentially achieved it.

It’s only 13.5cm on its longest side, which means it’s literally just the right size for a 5.5” phone. Despite being so small and only weighing about 200g, there’s a decent 96 degree field of view and adjustable optics.

How they’ve achieved this is actually quite impressive. The lenses are very thin, but 42mm in diameter.  Each lens consists of eight layers, including a blue light filter. That can help reduce the fatigue from having a bright LCD so close to your eyes.

It’s also nice that some of the limited space budget was spared for foam padding. The Leji comes with a head strap too and doesn’t enclose the phone, which makes it easy to tether or fit the phone.

The Leji VR Mini is an impressively small and well-designed HMD, but in the end it really isn’t pocketable. It is however much easier to simply put in a bag for when the urge to watch a movie or play a game takes you.
