In short, if you own a Galaxy S8 you need this for VR. If you own an older phone, you can upgrade to this and get an S8 later. If you don’t plan to get an S8, there’s little point in getting this instead of an older Gear that may now be cheaper.

With the launch of the Galaxy S8 and S8+ Samsung dropped a slick smartphone bomb on the industry, but Gear VR owners who had a previous Galaxy phone were out of luck, since the new phone doesn’t use Micro-USB anymore.
So with a new phone Samsung have updated their Gear VR model to work with it. The styling of the Gear has also been updated to be a bit slicker (and blacker) look. This new Gear VR is still an Oculus product, the optics and comfort should be at least as good as previous Gears. Which were very good in that department, it should be said.
While this is the only Gear VR that will work with the S8 phones, thanks to a changeable connector, this Gear VR is backwards compatible with all the most recent Gear models.
One significant addition to this version of the Gear VR is the included wireless control. That opens up a whole host of applications from the Oculus app store without having to put down any additional money.
So in short, if you own a Galaxy S8 you need this for VR. If you own an older phone, you can upgrade to this and get an S8 later. If you don’t plan to get an S8, there’s little point in getting this instead of an older Gear that may now be cheaper.

I recently purchased the Samsung Gear VR Headset to use with my Samsung Galaxy S8 Phone as I have a genuine interest in using VR for my work. I did have a small problem in setting the headset up and configuring it (the Software was relatively easy) as I am in the age group of more mature people. However I managed to figure it out and now it it is working just fine. It is not the first time I have experienced Virtual Reality. I am very impressed with the headset and it is a real experience. Their are a good number of programs that can be found in the Oculus App and their is also another Software Program called Virtual Reality. They both have a wide range of programs some of which are free and others their is a charge. for. I particularly like the World Travel Program on Oculus (it is free) and covers many countries and their is a menu. The VR Photography is stunning and all have captions, and their is some great video to. i have also downloaded the Roller Coaster Program which is amazing, but I would suggest not for the SqeamishThe remote controllers that comes with the headset and works via Bluetooth is really neat and works a bit like a Laser Pointer. It actually responds to movements of your hand and also has a large button that you can swipe either left and right or up and down to perform various actions. The Samsung Galaxy S8 is supplied with specially tuned AKG earphones that you plug into the phone and the sound is great. Alternatively you can use the Samsung gear Circle Earphones which are cordless and work with Blue Tooth (I also have a pair of these). The Samsung VR Headset also has a USB C socket that allows you to charge up your phone while you are using the VR Headset. IThe VR Headset is good value for money and for anyone that has either a Galaxy S6, S7, S8 or the S8 + I highly recommend this Headset if you have one of the compatible Samsung Galaxy Phones.
