The Samsung Odyssey is the first premium consumer HMD from the Microsoft Windows Mixed Reality series of headsets. It improves on the developer models that precede it in multiple ways.

Samsung has made it much more attractive and sleek, with a higher emphasis on comfort. It comes with higher resolution display panels and a significantly wider field of view. They have also traded the LED panels of the reference specification with AMOLED screens. While the cheaper WMR HMDs only have a headphone socket, Samsung have partnered with AKG to integrate high-end spatial audio into their HMD.

Just as with other headsets following Microsoft’s standard, the Odyssey uses onboard cameras to perform “inside out” tracking. This means you have no need for an external tracking sensor at all. Fully-tracked motion controls are also a standard part of the package.

These headsets are natively supported in Windows 10 and thanks to a recent patch you can also use Windows Mixed Reality Headsets with SteamVR applications.

While the Odyssey is the best-specified of the first WMR HMD generation, it is also the most expensive. On top of this, it doesn’t unlock developer functions, so it’s not a good purchase for those who want to create Mixed Reality of VR apps for the platform. Those with extra money in their budgets should however consider this their first choice until more premium takes on the WMR standard comes to market.
