The Mi VR Play is not particularly revolutionary, but it seems that it will compete with the likes of the Samsung Gear VR.

Xiaomi are marketing this as a premium HMD option with anti-reflective coatings on the lenses, many decorative options and nice construction materials.

Xiaomi is a standout technology company in an industry flooded with pretenders to the crown. Known affectionately as “China’s Apple”, the company has produced Smartphones and other hi-tech devices that have an almost unbelievable specification level for the price.

The secret lies in Xiaomi’s groundbreaking business and  marketing methods that relies on word-of-mouth and cuts down aggressively on development costs. Coupled with a virtually on-demand product philosophy and the company has become the tech enthusiast’s open secret.

Xiaomi has been making other products associated with smartphones such as power banks and action cameras. A tablet is in the works and now they’re also looking at entering the world of VR.

While there’s no word yet of an Oculus competitor from the company, they have put forward a mobile VR HMD case that was in beta testing at the time of writing.

The Mi VR Play is not particularly revolutionary, but it seems that it will compete with the likes of the Samsung Gear VR.

Xiaomi are marketing this as a premium HMD option with anti-reflective coatings on the lenses, many decorative options and nice construction materials. In particular, the zip mechanism used to secure the phone and the metal button stand out among other similar HMDs.

The entire phone fastening and accommodation system has been carefully thought out to work with almost any phone within the supported size range. Little details such as rubber risers solve common problems these HMDs have, such as unwanted presses of the volume rocker or power button.

If you are in China itself, there will also be a Xiaomi-sponsored content platform, but it’s unclear if this will ever leave the country’s borders.

Whatever Xiaomi finally delivers, it’s safe to say that it will be something special for the asking price
